The nose surgery or rhinoplasty is a procedure that takes less than 1 hour. It is performed with general anesthesia, leaving no scars, since all are hidden inside the nostrils.

When the respiratory function is an issue, we correct the functional and the aesthetic part in the same surgical procedure with totally natural results.
In some cases, we do chin augmentation to reach a natural balance of the profile. The scar is located inside the mouth and we use a small silicone implant.

The recovery period for these procedures is not painfull and takes approximately 7 days, which is enough time to go back to work with a slight inflammation/swelling of the skin.

For patient travelling from other cities or abroad, we recommend to stay in Bogota for 1 week, after which you can go back home and to daily activities.

Foreign patients must arrive to Bogota 2 days before the procedure, for proper preparation.

Dr. Amaya Answers

How is a nose surgery?

We perfectly understand the complex architecture of the nose, which is critical to achieve the best results.

What type of anesthesia do you use?

General anesthesia.

How long does this procedure take?

It takes between 40 and 60 minutes.

Is it useful to do projections on the computer?

Computer projections are not real and they may result in speculations. These projections are a marketing tool, but do little to predict the real result.

The best way of knowing the philosophy of each surgeon and predict the possible results is looking at the pre and post-surgery cases of other patients, as you can see in our gallery of clinical cases.

Where are the incisions made?

I always use a “close technique”, so that scars remain hidden inside the nose, even when we do nostrils cuts. I do not like the open technique with scars outside the nose, since these may be very evident.

How do you remove the hump or bump of the back of the nose?

I always remove the hump or bump by scraping, avoiding the use of hammer and chisel, because I believe the trauma generated is less painful. The result is predictable and controlled.

Is it a painful procedure?

The nose is a very sensitive area. However, contrary to what we may think, this surgery is little painful. In spite of the inflammation/swelling of the face during the first days, the pain in minimum.

Is it an ambulatory procedure?

The nose surgery is an ambulatory procedure. Therefore, after a couple of hours of recovery, patients leave the clinic to go home or to their hotel. If the nose surgery is associated to a large procedure, the patient must stay 1 night at the clinic.

Do you use tampons?

In most cases, I do not use tampons; however, in some few functional surgeries I use Merocell® tampons, which are slimy foams easy to remove since they do not stick to the walls of the nose.

Do you use implants?

Normally I use cartilage grafts of tissue removed from the nose of the patient. In more complex cases, they are obtained from the ear. Only in very particular situations, like in Asian noses, we use implants, generally made of silicone.

How long does the recovery period take?

Although the recovery occurs with little pain, bruises appear and there is a lot of inflammation/swelling during the first days. I recommend staying at home during the first week. After that period, the inflammation/swelling decreases enough to go back to daily activities.

How much time in advance do the patients from other cities have to be in Bogota?

We recommend that patients from other cities or abroad arrive to Bogota 2 days before the procedure, for proper preparation.

For how long do I have to keep the bandages?

Tapes are changed every week and are removed after 1 month. Patients from other cities may travel after 1 week and continue to change them by themselves.

For how long foreign patients or patients from other cities have to stay in Bogota after the surgery?

They must be in Bogota for at least 7 days, for proper recovery. Once patients go back to their homes, they can continue to change tapes on their own.

Where do foreign patients and patients from other cities stay (accommodation)?

Due to the large number of patients visiting us, we have our own accommodation, few blocks away from the clinic.

It is comfortable and has the facilities for proper recovery. It is ideal to recover far from the family circle, or it is suitable for foreign patients. It is conveniently priced to help our patients with proper accommodation. Also, we may recommend several hotels close to the clinic, which offer a wide range of prices, according to each patient’s budget: Hotel Options

What kind of precautions do I have to have before the procedure?

At least 1 or 2 weeks before the surgery, all homeopathic (natural drugs) medication, garlic or onion pills, vitamins and multivitamins must be suspended. Also, Omega 3 (fish oil), Ginkgo Biloba, vitamin E, Alka Zeltser®, Aspirine®, and other analgesics must be avoided.
In any event of pain before the procedure, we only recommend acetaminophen (Dolex® or Tylenol®).

Do obstructive problems improve with surgery?

In all nose surgeries, the functional part is explored and obstructive problems are corrected.

When do we see the results?

From the very first moment, you can see the change. One week after, the swelling decreases substantially to go back to regular activities. One month after, bandages are removed with the expected results. However, inflammation may continue until the third month, when all inflammation/swelling is gone for good.

When can I go back to work?

The nose surgery is little painful and does not produce any discomfort, only severe inflammation/swelling and bruises, which diminish during the first week, when you go back to regular activities.

What kind of special care do I have to have after my surgery?

It is important to avoid direct exposure to the sun and be very careful with hits during the first 3 months. We recommend using sunblock and protecting with an umbrella, hat, or cap.

How much does the nose surgery cost?

Prices vary according to the difficulty of each case. For most of the patients, the price is around 6 million Colombian pesos. For less difficult cases, it could go down to 4 million Colombian pesos. And for more complicate or secondary cases (correction of aftermath of other procedures), it could go up to 15 million Colombian pesos. These costs include the rights to the surgery room, anesthesiologist, and doctor’s fees. It is convenient to reserve approximately $200 USD for additional expenses, such as medications, laboratory exams, and medical insurance, etc.

What types of noses are there?

Latin Nose
The most evident characteristic of this group is the presence of an osseocartilaginous hump. This hump on the nose is frequently associated with a dropped tip, which accentuates when laughing, because of the presence of the depressor septum muscle. These cases, where a reduction of volume of the nose is performed are those with better results, since with a simple procedure of less than 1 hour we obtain surprising changes.

Afro-Descendent Nose
Although not all noses of this ethnical group are the same, they have a particular trend. Afro-descendants characterize for having the nose starting very low in the forefront (low radix) and with very small back. The tip is usually little projected and not well defined, with thick and very wide nostrils. The hump is rarely observed. Its cartilaginous structure is thin and weak, contrasting with a very thick skin. The philosophy, in these cases does not look to replace ethnic traces, but perfecting them, achieving the thinning of the tissues that make them more defined. The configuration of the tissues, in most of the patients makes changes achieved limited, since enough thinning of the tip is not often possible.

Asian Nose
The Asian nose is usually small, its back is low, and the tip is little projected. While in most cases the Caucasian nose looks to reduce the back, in Asian cases it looks to augment it. Its skin favors easy modeling of the tip, which is usually little defined.

What is Secondary Rhinoplasty?

This refers to the cases when there has been already one or several previous aesthetic or functional surgeries. They are usually difficult cases, because the internal scar formed in the tissues make the dissection complex and results less predictable.

What is Functional Rhinoplasty?

The functional part is critical in any aesthetic procedure. An aesthetic rhinoplasty always corrects obstructive problems, such as basal crests, deviations of the partition, and cauterization of the turbinates.
